Forklift Extensions & Forklift Slippers: The Complete Sizing Guide

Finding the right forklift extensions (forklift slippers) should be a quick and simple process! Here's your straightforward guide on how to measure your forklift tynes (tines / forks) so you can easily choose the right forklift slippers and get the correct size first time around.

1. Measuring Your Existing Tynes

Don't let a bad fit slow you down. A forklift extension (forklift slipper) that's too small will jam and seize, costing your team valuable time and frustration. One that's too large will be sloppy and unstable, creating a serious safety hazard and risking damage to your load. Get it right the first time by accurately measuring the width, thickness, and length of your existing tynes (tines / forks) before you order. A secure, perfect fit is the key to a fast, efficient, and safe operation.

Pro Tip: Always measure at the back of the tyne to get the most accurate size, avoiding any worn-down areas.

Are your tynes worn? If the thickness at the heel is worn down by 10% or more, they are no longer safe or legal. They must be replaced. Shop for replacement tynes here.

2. Calculate Maximum Safe Length

Using a forklift extension (forklift slipper) that's too long is a common, but dangerous mistake. To stay compliant with WorkCover and Australian Standards, you must use a forklift extension that is within 167% of your actual tyne length. This ensures your forklift can handle the load safely without dangerously shifting the load centre, which can lead to tip-overs. By calculating your maximum safe length, you ensure your equipment is both safe and fully compliant, giving you peace of mind on the job.

The Simple Rule: [Your Tyne Length in mm] x 1.67 = [Your Maximum Safe Extension Length in mm].

Things to Consider

  • Fit is Critical: Ensure the forklift extensions (slippers) fit your existing tynes / tines / forks.
    • Too small: They will jam and be difficult to move.
    • Too big: They will be sloppy, sit unevenly, and create an unsafe, unstable lift.
  • Structural Integrity: Avoid cheap, "open bottom" forklift slippers. Choose slippers with a fully enclosed bottom as this provides structural integrity and prevents deformation over time.
  • Finish & Durability: Opt for a zinc finish over a standard painted finish. Zinc offers superior protection against rust and wear, ensuring a longer lifespan.
  • Use Locking Pins: Always secure the slippers to the forks using the safety locking pins before every use. This prevents them from sliding off during operation.
    • Tip: Store the pins in a safe, designated place when not in use - they are notoriously easy to lose!
  • Proper Load Handling:
    • Slippers are designed to support long, stable loads, not increase the forklift’s maximum lift capacity.
    • Never pick up a heavy load at the very tip of extension. For maximum safety, always keep the load as close to the forklift carriage (heel of the forks) as possible.
